Many of Saving Shepherd’s photos and videos feature Amish buggies of all varieties gathered from communities across the country. But of course, the vast majority of these scenes come from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania - where few images are more deeply tied to the landscape and culture than the iconic gray Amish buggy rolling quietly through the countryside.
But while nearly everyone has seen an Amish buggy from the outside, far fewer have ever had the opportunity to look inside one. In fact, it is one of the more frequent questions we get asked. Surprisingly, the interiors are often far more practical, comfortable, and personal than most imagine.
Inside a typical Lancaster County Amish buggy, simplicity meets daily function. Most feature padded bench seating, storage beneath the seats, heavy blankets for winter travel, lanterns or permitted battery-powered lighting, and handcrafted leather reins and hardware worn smooth through years of use.
Some Amish buggy interiors remain very plain, while others reveal subtle touches of personality and craftsmanship developed over decades of everyday life. Cupholders, clocks, bumper stickers and even LED lights are not uncommon accoutrements.
The Amish buggy itself is carefully designed for the realities of Amish life - balancing durability, simplicity, weather protection, safety, and comfort without unnecessary luxury. While retaining hand-operated windshield wipers and dash control knobs along with the classic reflective safety triangle, some modern buggies may also include battery lights, hydraulic brakes, upgraded suspension systems, and weather-resistant materials, all discreetly incorporated while preserving the buggy’s traditional appearance.
While the outside of many Lancaster County buggies may appear nearly identical, the interiors quietly reflect the families who use them every single day. To visitors, the Amish buggy is often viewed as a symbol of another time. But inside these carriages is not history frozen in place, it is daily life continuing forward much as it has for generations across the back roads of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with a touch of personal flair!
